While my kids love all of the almond flour based baking being done in our kitchen lately, unfortunately, almond flour isn’t cheap.

At first, I thought we would limit almond flour goodies to occasional treats– after all, I try to keep a budget around here— but before long, the loud clamor for treats won out, and my almond flour quickly disappeared.

My budget was not happy.

Fortunately, the lack of almond flour in my kitchen gave me just the motivation I needed to try making my own almond flour.

I have a few store bought brands that I like to use –I’ll include the links below in case you want to try them out– but I wasn’t sure if the homemade version of would compare.

No harm in trying, though!!

(If you are near to a Trader Joe’s, their blanched slivered almonds are a good price! If you don’t mind a few brown specks in your flour, you can also use whole almonds.)

For my first attempt at homemade almond flour, I used a food processor to grind the almonds.

I was worried I would turn my almonds into almond butter, so I used the “pulse” function to prevent the almonds from getting too blended. It worked pretty well, although it was slightly grainier than the store bought kind.

Next, I tried using my Vitamix.

Because I use my Vitamix for literally EVERYTHING-

Since this amazing blender is SO powerful, it only took a few seconds to turn a cup of almonds into a very fine flour! (Just make sure to not try to make more than about a cups worth at a time). A much better texture than using the food processor, and since my Vitamix is always on the counter and ready to use, much more convenient than the food processor.

I made a batch of my  almond flour chocolate chip cookies -oh, the sacrifices we make for research-to test the flour out and they turned out wonderfully!

The sacrifice was well worth it.

Here is one of the more affordable brands of pre-made almond flour I like to use: https://amzn.to/2OUyJ0x
