I’ve used plant based milks my entire life. But a few years ago, I had some tests done and learned I’m technically allergic to dairy, soy, AND almonds. Naturally, my first concern was, “but what am I going to put in my coffee?!”.

Enter oatmilk.

Oat milk is:

  • Easy to make
  • Cheap
  • Gluten free (if you use gluten free oats)
  • Vegan
  • Easy to store
  • Quick
  • Creamy
  • Delicious
  • High in protein
  • Perfect for lattes

WHAT’S IN OAT MILK?

Oat milk is made from oats, that’s all. The texture is surprisingly similar  to dairy milk with a delicious, nutty flavor.

You can add additional flavorings and sweeteners in if you like. Some examples are:

  • cinnamon
  •  vanilla
  • dates
  • maple syrup
  • pumpkin pie spice (pumpkin latte, anyone?)
  • chai spices

WHY SHOULD I MAKE HOMEMADE OAT MILK?

Well, you don’t have to. There are actually some great brands out there you can buy. Just be sure to find a brand with simple, clean ingredients. Here is one of my favorite STORE BOUGHT OATMILKS.

If you choose to make your homemade oat milk, you can make sure the ingredients are high quality, that it is gluten free (if needed) and that its fresh! Plus, it’s truly just SO easy to make!

Also, did I mention it is great in smoothies? I use it quite a bit in my daily green smoothies and in the kids fruit smoothies.

Easy Homemade Oat Milk Recipe

So simple to make! Simply blend rolled oats with water, and voila! Oat milk!
Prep Time15 mins
Course: Drinks
Servings: 7 cups

Ingredients

  • 3 cups old fashioned oats
  • 9 cups water

Instructions

  • Add oats to a bowl with just enough water to cover. Allow to soak 15-30 minutes.
  • Add water and oats to a blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  • Pour the blended oats into a fine mesh sieve or nut milk bag and strain. Save the pulp for cookies!
